Grade 2 artists began by studying nature’s colours in the book Leaf Man, by Lois Ehlert. We saw that that autumn leaves are primary colours, secondary colours and brown. Also each leaf is never just one solid colour.

Next, we pondered the following questions…

What are the primary colours?  How can we make secondary colours? How can we make brown?

These were the goals of our painting…to practice our colour mixing skills.

We also played with positive and negative space. We mixed the colours and stamped around real leaves creating negative space prints. Then we painted the backs of the leaves and printed them in the negative spaces to add texture to our work.
